I wonder..

I wonder what it’s like

To live under the glittering sunshine,

For I live in the dark underground

With dirt and pebbles all around.

I wonder what it’s like

To sway in the rejuvenating breeze

Like my family upstairs do

Immersing in the morning dew.

I wonder what it’s like

To be patted by the evening drizzle

That makes its way down here,

Rarely these days, I fear.

I wonder what it’s like

To be visited by ‘bees’ and ‘butterflies’

Are they friendly like Mr. Earthwormy

Or minuscule like the microbes on me?

I wonder what people would say

When they see me, with body all hairy..

Will they call me a ‘beauty’

Or remark that I look ‘tasty’?

I wonder how it would be

To live on the other side of the crust

But I can’t try to shoot and thrust

As gravity tugs me into dirt and dust.

Maybe I should stop wondering

And be content with my surrounding,

Digging deep and sucking the precious

To make my family’s dinner delicious.

  1. Great personification.. Be it the flawless orchid or the useful sunflower or the enlightening peepal, there are ‘hairy’ roots at work.
The conveyance of selflessness by the finishing lines, in a refreshingly playful manner that catches the attention of the child in everybody.. I must say, you are not limited to beautiful poetry , you also inspire it. Proof , is right among these comments you got.

  2. Lovely poem. Loved this imagery “I wonder what it’s like

To sway in the rejuvenating breeze

    Like my family upstairs do

Immersing in the morning dew.” Keep writing. Without strong roots, no human can survive! 🙂

  3. A lovely imagination, Surya. Well written! I would like to extend my support to the roots:

    Only the root,
    knows the mighty truth.
    For without its breath,
    the plant must face death.
    Leaves may fall,
    the root stands tall.
    Life’s route,
is in the grip of the root!

      1. He He! I just felt bad for the roots. It was like they were envying the life above, which is a great perspective. I just wanted to remind them that they are the key! Don’t feel bad roots!
