The Big Dipper

I lie awake on the terrace, late at night

Staring at the splendid starry sky

And all I could watch, as hours pass by

Is the Big Dipper of seven lights.

Neither the crescent moon, nor the fleeting clouds

Or the dazzling stars twinkling in the background

Could steal my eyes away from the ‘plough’

That’s tilling my mind; my face aglow

With inexplicable joy of watching them

Dancing in the wide moonlit space

Like seven, precious divine gems

Studded in the celestial case.

I confess that I cannot withtake

The brimming love that mercilessly make

My heart flutter, and my stomach tingle

Like bells that rhythmically jingle;

The awe, the merry and the pluck

I derive when gazing at them , wonderstruck

And the bittersweet pain that silently stings

To remind me of the distance between

Us; for they are light years afar

Pointing at the blazing Polestar

That symbolizes my eternal fascination

With the seven angels of my generation.

I wrote this poem weeks ago as a tribute to my two loves – stars and BTS. I love the stars and nothing gives me more goosebumps than a beautiful starry sky. Similarly, I love the seven boys of BTS (the dorkiest, the sweetest and the most talented angels I know lol), and they are the rainbow of my life.

The Big Dipper has always been one of my favourite sights in the sky, mostly because there are a lot of tales and myths associated with them (for example, they have been personified as the seven great sages called ‘saptarishis’ in the Indian mythology). It is an asterism in the constellation Ursa Major (the Great Bear), prominently visible in the Northern sky. They point in the direction of the Pole Star that symbolizes constancy as it is ‘fixed’ in the sky.
